This is the origin of the whole "Exploding Asbestos Kamado" myth invented and perpetuated by Richard Johnson.
Exploding Asbestos Kamados
What most people haven't heard is the true story behind the myth. Our very own Curly was able to track down the originator of the email and this is his story:
Quote: | Hi Curly,
Yes, that's my buddy Sean's K.
All that happened is we ran the temp up to 700f way too soon and the moisture trapped inside boiled, resulting in roughly 30% of the tiles on the dome blowing off, and i do mean blowing!!!
This is no reflection on the product, rather the result of a pair of dummies behaving very stupidly[ SHEP and MOE?] With a name like yours you know what i mean.
All of this happened before Dennis took over. At the time Topo was trying to keep his head above water by selling a few K's, so the product was manufactured in the old RJ way, again no reflection on the product, the whole ballsup was down to the two Irish dummies.
When Dennis came along and heard what happened he immediately sent a replacement KK AND a replacement dome for the original. All free of charge, and bear in mind he had nothing to do with the original sale!!!
Sean's letter to RJ was a stupid response as RJ had nothing to do with the original transaction. If he was going to talk to anybody it should have been Topo, but i guess, tired and emotional[as in drunk] he wrote the letter you referred to, and that's how the whole "myth" started. |
Curly: So, what was the deal about asbestos...was that RJ's typical way of trying to cut down on the competition?
And he answered:
Quote: | Yes!! there was no asbestos. If you think about it, Topo made the K from the same mix of material he used when RJ was in charge, which as we all now know, was portland cement and volcanic ash.
So, basically the whole thing became another RJ bullshit smear. By the way , the replacement dome works fine, and by the time the replacements arrived we both knew enough to take it easy with the temps in the early stages , so now Sean has 2 K's, or more correctly 1 K7 and 1 KK, both of which work beautifully. |
So there you have it. |
