I would stick with Rutland's myself. Not just for metal.

Use the cement... it has excellent bonding properties. Not sure about the mortar.

found another product.

Mortar is meant to cement bricks together. It expands and contracts. its not meant to be cast in large qty. only fairly think layers.
The Castable Refractory Cement is what I need.

The Rutland's has been used by dozens of people to good effect. The other cement would probably be equally good but why risk it?

For me its mainly the costs.
and from the sounds of things, this particular Rutlands product has not been tried.
my local place had to special order it so I will likely try it.
I've been doing some reading.
We should probably use std refractory cement. that seems to be what Komodo-Kamado uses to cast their cookers.

I just used the Rutland's Cement to do a major crack repair on a K5. It worked very well. I've also used their mortar for smaller repairs.

I just finished using the Imperial moldable refractory cement to set a window in my Cinergy Wood stove. (apparently designed by Richard under the name Meridian). It even looks like a Komado cooker. Richard originally suggested me using M 63D which I did and as you guys already knew would never come. The Imperial stuff worked out great.
