FYI
when filling the grout use a rubber trowel, put grout on trowel and
push into the space between the tile. After you wipe the excess off the
tile with a damp sponge two or three times let the rest dry on the
tile, then rub off using cheese cloth. works great. Phinwa |

I
go along with the easy part. I would suggest, however, that we tile a
little different than you would for flat or for non-heat surfaces.
Which is, to apply MUCH more thinset and adhesive than in "normal"
tiling applications. What I mean by this is to fill the gaps between
tile with adhesive rather than grout because there is very little
adhesive in grout. This "locks" the tile by much more surface to hold
the tile. The end result is very little room for grout and the grouting
is more like staining the color desired. Maybe like "polishing". After
many years there becomes a little more space between the tiles (unless
sealing has been used) and there is more of a porous surface for the
grout. There is a lot of similarity to swimming pool tiling and repair.
It seems that each year there are better and better adhesives, but the
application remains much the same as it has been forever....slow but
easy and in many case rewarding. |

I
can knuckle tap around the dome of my 2004 Indonesian K and here a
noticable click behind the tile, but the base is rock solid. Can I
expect my dome tiles to start falling off soon? I bet much of the dome
tile is being held in place by thinset on the on edges of tile and
little against the dome. Some grout has flaked off. Is there a
manufacturer and color I should be looking for my Cobalt #7? I'll
regroute and seal to help the situation. |

Tony, I
have a '05 Mexican K and I can tap around with my fingernails and find
hollow sounding areas, too. Have been able to for months but nothing
has come off so the factory advice was basically "stop tapping and
worry about it if/when something actually happens". So I did. But...you
do need to take care of the grout. I had a couple early-use pinholes
and a little grout crack on the dome. I mixed a tablespoon of grout and
worked it in and haven't had the cracks or holes reappear. The grout is
available at Home Despot and most hardware stores - it's from one of
the big manufacturers but I don't recall the name at the moment. I
think the color is "Charcoal" or "Charcoal Grey" or something like
that. I'm sure someone will chime in with an authoritative answer. After
touching up the grout, I sealed it. It might help. It might not. But
it's cheap and easy insurance and will probably help keep the water
from getting under the tile. |

this
is really a stumbling block to me. i still plan to by a ceramic cooker
soon after my wedding and this brand is one of the 2 i will choose
from. i asked if this was normal and i cant find where that post went. i
see where some folks were offered replacements, so my question is to
the owners, if all the tiles fall off do ya'll replace the grill for
me. its going to be next year before i by one but im trying to get
things all figured out. |

Quote (from the website) "LIFETIME GUARANTEE We
guarantee your Kamado will never "burn out," or break such that the
unit looses its ability to function. Our formulas will withstand heat
that can be obtained with charcoal. You can truly expect a lifetime of
enjoyment." As I read the guarantee, it says nothing about tiles falling off. This to me
means that it a maintenance issue. When I've chipped a tile or two (or
more), the people @ Kamado were very helpful with information and tips.
Most of that information is also included on this forum (using the
"search" function). BOB |

ok,
that was the question I wanted answered. seems like a few people were
offered a replacement in this thread when their tiles fell off. So
tiles and tilework is not warrentied i guess. just curious
are these major tile problems maintenance issues? or these people not
doing something right according to the maintenance book for there tiles
to be falling off like this. im good with maintennace so if thats all
it is im ok. (Message edited by bugs on July 24, 2006) (Message edited by bugs on July 24, 2006) |

Bugs, I
think most of the "tile problems" could be traced to maintenance issues
(my problems certainly were). The fact of life is that tiles do come
loose on almost any surface they are installed on including bathrooms,
kitchens, etc. The main cause of tiles coming loose is water getting
under the tiles. This happens via water seeping through the grout. The
extra issue with the K is that it also goes through heating cycle which
means controlling water penetration is even more important. I had a
tile kitchen counter once and the tiles near the cook top kept popping
off until I woke up and sealed the grout better. The only 100% sure
solution is to go textured which has no tiles. It may not look as
spectacular but it will be trouble free. All that said, there
is the official guarantee and then there is the people behind the
company. What most people have found is that if you deal with the
Johnson family in a reasonable, adult fashion they will bend over
backwards to help you out. I know that they were very helpful to me,
provided expert advice when needed and have provided me several
replacement parts at no cost. Kent

Just
a follow up...I still have not fixed my tiles as I'm hoping Kamado will
get back to me about getting some sheets of tile for this extensive
project. I hope they get back to me soon. I've been emailing and
calling and haven't heard from them. Cross your fingers.... |
