Howdy. I just placed an order for a #5 for my birthday!
Look forward to seeing it.
This is a replacement for an
Imperial Kamado that I've had and used constantly since the late
'80's. I wanted to replace it because I'd have to buy another hinge
since I'm just about rusted/bent my way through my second set, and
the vent door on the bottom is stuck, and...
Anyway, I
didn't realize there were two companies using the "kamado" name
until now. Is there a relation between the two companies? I knew of
the Big Green Egg line before, but hadn't come across the Kamado
company until I started looking around the web.
Thanks, Tim.

If I'm not mistaken "kamado" is a generic word that makes
you think of ceramic bbq's used in japan. Digging into the various
Ceramic Cooker manufacturers, produces the word " kamado" in their
name - ie "Primo Kamado". Richard seems to have cut straight to the
chase and named his brand of kamados "Kamado".

Tim:
Imperial Kamado is an old time Japanese clay
cooker manufacturer that in recent years has relocated to China due
to cost reasons. Richard, please correct me if I got my facts
skewed. |

Yep, I pulled up their site, and it appears they're in
Japan with manufacturing in China. They have a US office in the L.A.
area.
So they're two completely unrelated companies then.
Gotcha. |

I trade named the word “Kamado” when I was making them in
Japan in 1960. We got tired of calling them Hibachi “Pots” and I
came up with the word Kamado which I took from Mushikamado. The word
Kamado means nothing in Japanese. Mushikamado means a steam rice
cooker, which is what the original pot was used for. Japanese NEVER
used this pot as a barbecue grill. They cooked rice in it! It never
had a grill or bands (hinges), rather had a big pot that hung from
the same "fire ring" that I later put a cooking grill on. I used to
sell this pot and the idea of my Mushikamado grill came from this
rice pot. The name Kamado has, to some degree, obtained a “secondary
meaning” but in fact I have the Common Law right to the name Kamado
as well as a Trade Name registered in 60’s about the same time as I
obtained a U.S. Patent (see Photo of Patent on this website).
Correcting the unauthorized use of the name “Kamado” and the
misrepresentation is on my “To Do” list. In the mean time, many
people find our website and our Kamado by searching for the word
Kamado found in companies using my name. So I guess in the long run
it doesn’t matter. However, it is a little annoying when persons
plagiarize my ideas and work. BGE copied my design but at least
named it different. Thank you BGE! As for “Primo Kamado”….. there
are a lot of words out there, they should select one of their own.
Its easy and I am sure it would make them feel better.

Thanks for the info, Richard. I'm glad I found my way to
your company this time around, as I always try to keep my money in
the USA when possible, and from what I've seen and read, your
product is the best! |

The infringement may even help you! I found this site
while searching for "kamado" in my quest for a BGE dealer in my
area.
Aside from the my opinion that this product is made
better, looks better, and is larger, the cajones that BGE shows by
thanking "imitators" while using someone elses registered name is
enough to make me buy a Kamado anyway! :-)
After reading the
history here I went back to their site and read theirs. Makes for
some amusing reading when you know the "facts". Got a Cobalt Blue
mosaic on order. Whoohoo! |

Richard,
I know some pretty good IP (Intellectual
Property-fancy for Patent) attorneys here in Houston. One that
presently works for us is a bulldog when it comes to harassing
infringers and trade name stealers. He's won several large
settlements for his clients including my company. I know it would be
inconvenient to have someone in Houston, but Houston seems to have
more IP attorneys then the rest of the US combined, so these guys
have to work harder to keep their clients .
Anyway, just let me know if you're interested,
I'd be glad to give you his name. |

Jeff, thanks for the IP Attorney. I am sure Houston would
be fine. See the custom #7 Cobalt with the new Logo on the tile. We
will register this as our TM and TN and will be on all Custom
Kamados and similar logo on Mosaic. How do you like the Logo? Also,
all new handles have the script KAMADO similar. |

Hey Richard, I placed my order for a Cobalt blue #7 on
the 20th/March/2002, any chance my Kamado will have that new logo? |

How do I like the Logo? I think it is GREAT. When do the
handles start having the script? I ordered a #1 that should be about
2 weeks away. By the way, I found out about the Kamado by way of the
egg and Harry's posts on a couple of newsgroups. I can't thank
anyone enough. Bob in Orlando |

Oy! Bob! Don't blame because you fell amongst it, eh ...
Nice logos, Richard. Please don't try and replace that
wonderfull wooden dowel handle on my K7 though. A person must
maintain "standards".
